It's been almost 3 months since I left the Whisney land where people ditched their bikes and spend most of the time on the white hills. The weather has been just perfect for biking near Tokyo area, no rain for straight 35days, fallen leaves with majic traction etc. I know I could've written an article here much earlier...on a sunny day? No way I gotta go ride. Fortunately or not, it's raining now. So here's the highlight of the past few months in Japan...

Potentially, One of the best places for Friday ride if it's ever gonna happen in Japan.

There are't many bike specific trails in Japan but you'll be surprised how people here are passionate about biking. They have jobs, they have families, and they love to spend their time on 2 wheels whenever they can. It doesn't matter where you live, right? Also it's awesome to see more people are loving their Chromags and they ride hard!

The AT's Showdown course is big to say the least...First step down is 15 x 30, into a 37 footer and a few 25 footers following. Should be a rad day tomorrow of hitting big jumps on my Monk.

Occupy Trails.

What is a Friday Ride? It really depends who you ask I suppose…

If you want to get philosophical about it, what is anything? Like what if I asked you last year what the word ‘occupy’ meant? You may have had a different answer then, from the the one you have now, or will have a year from now.

Whether your asking me or not – here is my answer to the first question...

A Friday Ride is Chromag Bikes.

Poppa Ritz who owns Chromag Bikes is also the ringleader in a peculiar club of mountain bike riders in Whistler who try hard to make themselves free to go play on Fridays. It began about 13 years ago as a simple thing; get a group together on (every) Friday and ride mountain bikes. It would be easy to interject “Fight Club” references here but I won’t.

Too many stories could be written about any one Friday Ride of the past 13 years.

Friday Rides require a host that is usually nominated by someone within the circle. The host has to provide a place for everyone to gather on Friday morning. The host has to prepare a good breakfast for the riders. The host can delegate to other riders to bring ingredients for the breakfast. The breakfast must be satisfying and keep the riders going on the epic journey that lies ahead. The host holds the right to choose the adventure of the day – usually epic.

Just this past weekend we had the 3^rd Annual Steve Mitchell Fall Classic Friday Ride in North Van. NORTH VAN!

N.V. is sacred.

Mitchell's Friday Rides always attract a thick list mtb heads - Olympians, Mtb hall of famers, pro lensemen, shop owners and of course the regular every Friday Ride character(s).

When Mitchell hosts – we are guaranteed a great breakfast, great N.V. trails and a great post ride Apres. This past weekend we were treated to a lovely casserole of bacon/eggs/cheese (and I'm not sure what else) with Corn Flakes baked on top. Awesome.

Friday rides are a time to be in the woods, to be with friends and really just get down to it and have a lot of fun. We often look forward to these rides to test a new product, ride a recently overhauled bike or to just put the hurts on one another.

These are the good times, and we are having them - thanks Mitchell for a another good one!

Apres: Chromag Bikes HQ; 2-1208 Alpha Lake Rd in Function Junction, Whistler

Course designed by the North Shore Billet boys that utilizes some of the best south end trails. The Après will include biig sound bass amplified entertainment with selections by the Gypsy Phantom. Food will be served by gourmet caterers Deep Powder Catering a fusion of traditional French technique with unique World flavors in a West Coast Spirit. Every great ride deserves a refreshing pint, thanks to Phillips Brewing Co. for providing the suds.

Show and Shine:
The format is simple; shine your Chromag Bike (yes, it must be a Chromag) and fill out your registration card and show your bike off to the crowd of fellow Twoonie riders (bike stands provided on site). Each Twoonie rider in attendance gets one vote to pick the Best in Show.

In the past, the contestants have gone to great lengths to show their Chromag bicycle and get votes. Past winners have included a Peep Show, a full surround sound speaker wall, a freshly pimped out top of the line build kit and shown before ever hitting dirt and another winner did a custom paint job down to hand painted spoke nipples which took the whole night before the Show and Shine. Anything goes when a Chromag shows!

This year, all showing contestants will receive a competitors accreditation which grants them access to our Chromag Bikes VIP Lounge. Only they will know what happens inside the VIP Lounge. No Cameras will be permitted in the VIP Lounge and Security will be tight.

Wades Excellent Adventure

A truly awesome event went down Saturday on the North Shore of Vancouver, arguably the birthplace of modern style mountain biking. The event was hosted and presented by the Godfather of Freeride - Wade Simmons, a North Shore local and mountain bike Hall of Famer. Chromag entered a team into the Corporate Category consisting of Bossman Ian Ritz, Julian Hine, J-F Robert, Matty Richard and Dan Skogland. Naturally, we were all ripping our steel Chromag hardtails.

The format was great. It was a team event where each team had to ride and finish together - exactly how we like to do our own Friday rides.

Teams were given a card at the start with their route for the first lap. It was a mass start but not all teams were dropping into the same trail on the first lap. All teams ended up doing the same three laps by the end. The whole ride was amazing, the gravel road climb up Fromme was a perfect chill spin or, for some, a suffer-fest climb. The choice of trails we rode had Team Chromag hooting and hollering like enraged mountain warriors all the way down.

The atmosphere was chill, no number plates, and a party vibe blossomed as teams finished. The later teams finished by riding right through the partying crowd. The final trail "Bobsled!" was enough to keep a smile going for hours.

Team Chromag finished 3rd overall and 2nd in the corporate category.

Thanks to Wade and all the great sponsors that made it possible - hope this happens next year, we are looking forward to it already!

My First Day in the Park - May 26th Loonie

Day One in the Bike Park happened for me last Thursday along with a couple hundred other people during the Summit Bike /Whistler Golf Course Loonie Race. It wasn’t exactly how I had planned my first ride in the park this year, and the weather seemed threatening, but I hate to miss a good loonie race. I was curious to see how much snow was up there too.

Bike Park loonies usually involve a climb up to mid station and then a fun fast descent. I always ride my trail bike rather than my park bike though. It's worth it for the climb.

The course was grueling. We headed up the main road to the lower skills centre and then got onto B-Line. People were red lining for sure. I just tried to stay focused on the wheel ahead of me. Climbing B-line was a bit wet in places and people were having trouble with some of the muddy berms.

I tried out my new adjustable height seat post and it was amazing. I rode to the top of the climb and just pushed the button to drop my seat while everyone else was getting off to lower theirs. Haha!

After the hell climb it was time to go down. We came all the way down Crank It Up which was unbelieveably fun. I forgot how much I loved that trail. And in a loonie race it is even more fun because you are charging down it with a lot of people around you. I kind of forget that I am on a little hard tail with no full face helmet and no protection. But the trails were in good condition. There were just a few wet sections on Crank It Up. There was a pretty muddy puddle getting onto the box and a couple muddy corners right after that. But the rest of it is sweet. We finished up the race on Heart of Darkness, another favourite of mine.

Now I am ready to ride park and it only took one lap that I had to pedal up. Next time I'll bring the big bike and the full face though. Can't wait.

The Picture above is a snapshot of the scene after the Nimby Fifty Mtb race that went down this weekend in Beautiful Pemberton B.C. where Mountain Biking is truly sacred.

I am almost scared to admit the sacredness of our sport in this town as the locals are so good to their trails. As soon as the white stuff is almost gone - THEY SHOVEL! Then they buff, and they build and the trails are amazing (sorry Pemby - cats out of the bag!).

There was a Baby Jesus Tent Rally in Pemby this weekend as well. I twice passed the tent as sermon was is session and twice was curious to stop and listen in but did not. This particular sect of Jesus worshipers were also praising Chuck Norris - no joke...wtf?

Chromag Bikes only made it to the Dirt Rally - and it was good. The kids race was a spectacle to behold (see picture above). Three different starts for kids groups all under 6 yrs. Wow! I saw the same looks on these kids faces that I saw on some 300 adults on the start line not five hours earlier.

As you can also see, the crowd in the background celebrated Apres as only the Sea to Sky know how to do. Papa Josh had the live music vibes going sweet, beer flowed, gourmet food was ate and smiles were sustained for hours.
I remember the Sunset Series of the late nineties in the Capitol of which the Tall Tree Cyle blog speaks - they had a good vibe for sure and then died out somehow, like someone stole the fun. My suggestion at the time was to change the course each week which they never did.

The WORCA Twoonies are why I moved to Whistler. With a different course and sponsor each week. Three hundred people show up including the Mayor, your Dentist, your Lawyer, Pro skiers and Bikers and seasonal foreign accented newbies all beaming with Fun.
